Phew it’s all over for another year! So glad we’re not straight off on our big charity expedition the next day like last year, we leave for London on Friday so fortunately I have a week to recover as I’m knackered!
Thank you to everyone who braved the drizzle to attend this years Cardiff Zombie Walk. It was a real shame that there was a bit of rain, but it is Wales, what are we to expect! Huge well done to everybody who turned up to take part. Despite over twice as many people saying they were going to come as last year on the Facebook event page, unfortunately it was about the same size as last year. Next year we wont be put off by the rain, hopefully it won’t rain and there will be the promised hundreds who said they were coming that chickened out!
The set up…
…was much more professional than last year, we had the ZSW zombification tent full of Make-up artists, We had: Stacey Williams, Amy Salter, Lee Morgan, Sophia Pritchard and Sean Chick all doing a great job making up people as zombies for donations.
Thank you very much to the hospitality again of the Ernest Willows where we started and ended the walk. Because of the drizzle they put out the awning and we had the very talented photographer-
Antti Karppinen (http://anttikarppinen.com/2015/05/corporate-headshots-of-zombies/ )
Taking zombie portraits for us all.
We had a great mix of people, adults, students, teens, families and kids. And next year there will be lots more of us! We talked briefly about the three charities we were raising money for. We sold Raffle tickets, (see below for raffle results) all raising money for our three charities… People got made up had drinks and food. Before we left we had a quick Zombie 101 Training session where people practised shuffling and groaning effectively! -”zombie noise”
The Walk-
We then left as a group along the planned route, down Newport Road, down Queen Street where we had the most fun, handing out flyers for ZSW, getting donations from members of the public, being filmed by Wales Online who wrote a great article about the event with pictures and video here: http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/zombies-queen-street-cardiff-charity-9172388
shocking, scaring and entertaining members of the public along the way. Down the Hayes where the drizzle got a little heavier, we cut through an arcade onto St Mary’s Street. As the rain was a bit miserable now we shortened the route a little, we decided not to go through the park as it was unlikely there would be many people there so we walked back up Queen Street doing a few set pieces chasing a ‘survivor’ down the road.
We made it back to The Ernest Willows for more drinks and relax.
The group had dissipated by the time I came to announce the best Zombie winner.
There were great efforts made by our five Make-up artists, But I my two favourite zombies were both made by the same person, I couldn’t choose myself, that wouldn’t be fair so…
The best Zombie of Cardiff Zombie Walk 2015 was: Daniel Burston
He wins a free ticket to Junes Zombie Survival Weekender.
Daniel was made up by the talented Stacey Williams: https://www.facebook.com/roguecreativehairandmakeupartist?fref=ts Rogue hair and makeup artist
The Afterparty:
We shuffled along to the Full Moon Pub on Womanby Street (thank you again to the owner and staff for hosting us) they had the Red Sun Metal Festival going on this weekend upstairs and so there were plenty of people around to help with our low numbers!
We had a vegan bake sale for donation with vegan, cakes, cookies, sos rolls, pasties, pizzas and other goodies, and an Animal Rights info stall from Cardiff Animal Rights manned by Sarah Williams-Baker.
And we had three Bands thank you very much to:
-Between Waves: Between Waves – “A different take on Metal” www.facebook.com/BetweenWaves
-anOise: Experimental noise who played last year. www.facebook.com/ANOISE
and
-DeadEndFriends: Dead End Friends- Bluesy Rock www.facebook.com/thedeadendfriends
And thank you to our spoken word act Nicodemus Ruben www.facebook.com/NicodemusPoetry who performed some of his thought provoking poems.
Few hitches but we got there in the end, we drew the raffle as the last band one of the Metal bands from the Red Sun Festival did an acoustic set and then we packed down and went home!

Money Raised:
With the rain during the day putting people off attending we still did really well.
Most people didn’t donate to get into the afterparty because they had all paid for wristbands for the Metal Festival and so didn’t want to pay anymore even though it was for charity (something to consider for next year!)
We made most money from the make-up donations, the raffle and the collection through the street.
The event managed to raise £256.78 for the three chosen charities:
Crisis- The homeless charity.
CALM: The Campaign Against Living Miserably – The male suicide prevention charity.
And
The Blue Cross- The animal charity/
This figure will go into the pot together with the money we are raising during next weeks charity Trek walking 161miles from London to Cardiff. And will be split equally between the three charities.
If you haven’t donated yet you can donate/sponsor us here:

The vegan Bake sale also managed to raise £32.26 for Cardiff Animal Rights from the sale of their vegan food, (although Sarah did sell my dinner!).

CRITISISM AGAINST CARDIFF ZOMBIE WALK
I’ve just read some concerns from people on the Wales Online coverage of the event that I thought I would address.
I am the organiser of Cardiff Zombie Walk. I am also a parent. And Cardiff Zombie Walk is a family friendly event which has children attend every year.
My business Zombie Survival Weekender also has a youth and family event (22-23rd August) where parents and their children get to learn essential survival skills and have a camping trip and enjoy a child friendly horror experience.
A lot of research and thought has gone into involving children in scare events. We explore the psychology of fear, what makes us scared, why we are afraid, what is real and what is pretend, feeling safe enjoying fear. Etc.
One of my favourite parts of being in the ever growing UK scare industry is not the scaring, the shock, the jump, the flinch, the fight or flight, rabbit-in-a-headlight scared moment… My favourite part is the relief filled smile as the fear ebbs away, the relaxed joy and warm safe feeling everyone gets as the heart stops racing and the panic is over, usually resulting in beaming smiles, giggling laughter. This post-fright relief is empowering and something I am proud to give to people of all ages both at my businesses events ( www.zombiesw.co.uk) and at my free events I put on for charity (e.g Cardiff Zombie Walk)
This year we are raising money for three charities; Crisis-the homeless charity, CALM-the (Campaign Against Living Miserably)-the male suicide prevention charity and The Blue Cross the animal charity. All three are aware we are raising money for them and have supported us in our fundraising efforts with promo-material, collection tins, balloons etc…
If anybody would like to talk to me further about any concerns they have please don’t hesitate to contact me at: info@zombiesw.co.uk
Thank you again for everyone who helped make this years Cardiff Zombie Walk a success!
